The Short Answer: In 99% of Cases, No
At The Real Houselights of NJ, we generally install the professional holiday lighting we supply as part of your display. We are not normally a labor-only service for boxes of customer-owned Christmas lights.
But there is an important distinction: a full installation built around customer-supplied lights is different from asking for help with one favorite decoration while we are already decorating your home. If you have a piece that is part of your family’s tradition, please ask. We can review it and let you know whether it can reasonably fit into the work.
We want the policy to be clear without making your display feel impersonal. The lighting system can be professionally planned while still leaving room for the details that make the holidays yours.
Why We Usually Supply the Lighting We Install
A design that fits your home
We plan a display around the actual rooflines, entrance, windows, and landscaping you choose to highlight. Supplying the lighting lets us select the components and quantities for that design instead of beginning with whatever lengths happen to be in a storage bin.
That matters at corners, separate roof levels, and transitions around architectural details. The goal is a consistent, intentional appearance with the right coverage for your selected package and add-ons.

A consistent look across the display
Lights bought in different years may have different bulb shapes, spacing, or shades of white. Even two products described as warm white may look noticeably different beside each other. Supplying the main lighting system gives us more control over how the roofline, windows, and other selected areas work together.
This does not mean your favorite personal decoration needs to match every bulb. A distinctive piece can be a focal point precisely because it is different. The main display should still feel coordinated around it.
Components we can plan and service
When we supply the system, we know the components selected for the installation and can plan replacement parts and service around them. Customer-owned strings and kits can involve unfamiliar connectors, missing parts, model-specific restrictions, or a condition that is difficult to assess until everything is unpacked.
Using our supplied lighting keeps the installation scope clearer and helps us support the display we agreed to provide. See the commercial-grade lighting guide for more about the components behind a professional installation.
A service focused on the whole season
Professional holiday lighting is more than putting lights up. Your chosen display is part of a seasonal process that includes installation, maintenance, removal, and storage as described in your proposal. Supplying the system helps keep those stages connected.
When comparing quotes, look at that complete scope. A labor-only quote to hang existing strings is a different service from a professionally supplied and managed holiday display.

Maybe you have a decoration you have put out for years, a special wreath, or a piece your children look forward to seeing every December. We understand why you would want to keep it in the scene.
If we are already doing your home, tell us about it. We will consider the decoration, its condition, where you want it placed, and how it would fit with the installation. A reasonable request may be possible; approval depends on the actual item and the work involved.
The exception is a conversation, not a promise that every personal item can be installed. Roof access, weight, mounting needs, electrical suitability, and compatibility can all affect the answer. It is much easier to discuss those details in advance than to discover them when the crew arrives.

What this exception does—and does not—cover
Asking about a favorite decoration while we are already installing your house is different from asking us to install an entire customer-owned roofline system. The exception does not automatically extend to a full collection of light strings, a complete retail kit, or a separate labor-only visit.
If we can help with an item, we will confirm what the help includes and any additional scope before proceeding. Do not assume that a personal item has the same service or warranty arrangements as the lighting we supply; we will clarify that as part of the discussion.
How to Ask About Your Decoration
- Send a clear photo. Show the entire item, plus its plug, mounting points, or label if those details are relevant.
- Tell us the approximate size. Include its dimensions and, if it is substantial, its approximate weight.
- Show where it belongs. A photo of the intended location helps us understand height, access, and how it relates to the new display.
- Explain the tradition. Tell us what you love about it. That helps us suggest how to make it feel at home in the design.
- Wait for confirmation. We will let you know whether we can help and what the agreed scope will be.
You can mention the item while we discuss your quote or before your scheduled installation. Asking early gives us the best opportunity to plan, and it avoids assuming the crew will have a particular mounting component or enough additional time on the day.
How to Start When You Already Own Lights
You do not need to inventory every string before exploring a professionally supplied display. Begin with what you want the house to look like. Choose the roofline coverage and accents that matter most, then tell us about any personal decoration you hope to include.
Our package and add-on guide explains the design choices with photos. If your favorite part of the season is a welcoming entrance, start there: a wreath or garland may give you the effect you want. If you love seeing the entire home outlined from the street, compare the roof coverage first.

The instant quote tool lets you begin with your home photo and compare options. Our screenshot walkthrough shows where to tap and what each step means.
Common Questions About Customer-Owned Lights
Will you hang lights I bought from a store?
In almost every case, no. Our standard service uses the professional lighting we supply and plan for your display.
What if my lights are brand new or described as commercial grade?
The general policy still applies. Product age or a commercial-grade label does not turn the request into our standard supplied installation service. Ask before purchasing anything specifically for us to install.
Can you help with one favorite decoration?
Possibly. If we are already decorating your home, send us a photo and describe the placement. We review these requests individually and confirm what is feasible.
Can you install a customer-owned permanent lighting kit?
We supply and install our own permanent lighting systems. We do not install customer-supplied big-box kits. Our permanent lighting page explains the system and installation approach we offer.
Should I bring the decoration out when the crew arrives?
Please discuss it beforehand. Advance photos and details let us consider the work and confirm expectations before installation day.
A Professional Display Can Still Feel Like Your Family’s Christmas
Our policy helps us deliver a cohesive display with a clear service plan. Your traditions still matter. Start with the professionally supplied design, tell us about the decoration you love, and let us explore whether we can help include it.
